
With a total of 135 hours of intensive class time, this comprehensive Emergency Medical Technician-Basic course meets the Massachusetts requirement of instruction and practice necessary for the student to sit for the two-part Massachusetts EMT-Basic examination. Successful completion of this course and, by extension, the Massachusetts written and practical examination, ensures EMT-Basic certification through the Massachusetts Department of Public Health’s Office of Emergency Medical Services.
Areas of instruction covered through lectures and hands-on practice include: legal issues; general pharmacology; respiratory and cardiovascular emergencies; OB/GYN emergencies; musculoskeletal, head, and spine trauma; soft tissue injuries; hazardous materials; ambulance operations; emergency medical techniques for children; and scene safety.
Evaluation is based on class participation and performance on class exams, quizzes, and practical exercises.
Prerequisites:
Be able to read, understand & communicate in English
Be free from addiction to alcohol or any drug
Be able to lift and carry 125 pounds
Be free from any physical or mental defect or disease which might impair his/her ability to provide emergency care within the scope of the EMT-Basic's training and responsibilities, or which might jeopardize the health of another member of the class.
The total tuition for the EMT-Basic Program is $ 750.00. This includes the required text and workbook. Additional books may be suggested to support the current material. Participants will also be responsible for any additional fees required by the Commonwealth. A non-refundable application fee of $250.00 is due with the application, with the remaining tuition due by day one of the program.
Note: this program does not certify students as an EMT-Basic at the completion of the course. Successful completion of the course will allow the student to be considered eligible to take the Massachusetts EMT-Basic practical exam.
