Day 1

Keynote Presentation

Title: Life, Death and Everything in Between

Blood. Broken glass. Twisted metal. Death. At some point in our careers, every EMT has asked himself the question, “Is this job really worth all this?” All too often, we discover that EMS does not love us nearly as much as we love it. The hours are long, the pay is low, and the pressures are enormous. So why do we continue to do it? Join Kelly Grayson as he describes a career arc from rookie EMT to experienced paramedic to career burnout and beyond. You’ll see yourself in these stories and laugh alongside him as we examine how we face Life, Death and Everything In Between.

Target Audience: BLS and ALS Providers

Presentation 2

Title: Overcoming the Pediatric Pucker Factor

It's 3:00 am and you're sound asleep when the call comes in - "Baby won't wake up." Instantly, you're wide awake, trying to recall normal ranges for pediatric vital signs, medication dosages and equipment sizing. You can't remember the last time you intubated a child, and you've only inserted an intraosseous needle in a manikin. As you drive to the scene, your stress level increases. Will you be able to handle it? Join us in this informative, lighthearted presentation as we teach you how to overcome "pediatric pucker factor."

Target Audience: BLS and ALS Providers

Presentation 3

Title: The Dirty Dozen: Beyond the Basics of Thoracic Trauma

In this informative and interactive presentation we will discuss basic assessment and management of hidden trauma - what works and what doesn’t, what is worrisome and what isn’t, and the hidden perils that may lurk behind seemingly insignificant injuries.

Target Audience: BLS and ALS Providers

Day 2

Keynote Presentation

Title: Eating Our Own Young

Participate in any EMS forum, or eavesdrop on a few squad room discussions, and it’s obvious that EMS eats its own young: Volunteers are unprofessional and hold back the profession. Fire medics would rather be putting out fires than taking care of sick people. Private ambulance companies are a bunch of money-grubbing mercenaries who value the bottom line over patient care. Rural medics are inexperienced and unskilled hicks who spend most of their shifts watching television, and urban medics believe that diesel fuel is the answer to every problem. Join Jason Dush and Kelly Grayson as they examine and dispel many of those stereotypes and teach us to appreciate the unique strengths and challenges faced by our colleagues in differing systems.

Target Audience: BLS and ALS Providers

Presentation 2

Title: Children with Special Health Care Needs

Quick, what’s the lower limit systolic pressure for an eighteen-month-old toddler? What’s the normal resting respiratory rate for that patient? How old will she get before she develops stranger and separation anxiety? What are normal cognitive and verbal skills for a patient her age?

If you knew the answer to all of those questions, wonderful. But can you answer them for an eighteen-month-old with hydrocephalus, cerebral palsy, a ventriculoperitoneal shunt and a tracheostomy?

Join us in this presentation as we learn to examine and treat a pediatric patient whose normal is nothing close to normal; the child with special healthcare needs.

Target Audience: BLS and ALS Providers
