Presentation 1

Title: Responding to Radiological/Nuclear Emergencies

Does the idea of responding to an incident involving radiation scare you? What’s the difference between a radiological and a nuclear weapon? Are you trained and equipped to handle an emergency involving a radioactive emitter? We’ll take the fear out of the trefoil and make the complex simple. This interactive session will provide an overview of how to recognize and safely respond to emergencies involving radiation. Topics will include: basic chemistry, types and sources of radiation including weapons that utilize radioactive material, methods of protecting ourselves, detection and monitoring, signs and symptoms of injuries and illnesses caused by radiation exposure, decontamination, treatment, and case studies.

Target Audience: BLS and ALS Providers

Presentation 2

Title: EMS and Midwifery: Natural Childbirth Partnership

Have you ever responded to a childbirth emergency call and there's a Midwife on scene? Whose patient is it now? What the heck is a "Doula" anyway? Planned "Out Of Hospital" births are increasing, and more parents are turning to Midwives and natural childbirth as their path for bringing children into the world.  EMS traditionally has not included response involving natural childbirth in its training. Many providers have little understanding of the field of Midwifery and the roles Midwives play in the birthing process.  This presentation will educate attendees in the process of natural childbirth, review emergencies that can occur in the out of hospital setting, and how Midwives can be partners, rather than adversaries, in solving OB/delivery emergencies in the out of hospital setting.

Target Audience: BLS and ALS Providers
