Biography

Dr. Durkin is a Board Certified Emergency Physician and EMS Director at Mercy Medical Center in Springfield, MA.  A former firefighter and EMT in college, he eventually received his MD degree from State University of New York Health Science Center at Brooklyn in Brooklyn, NY.  In addition, Lou is the EMS Director for the Agawam Fire Department, Ludlow Fire Department, Alert Ambulance, National Ambulance and RAM Ambulance all within the Western MA area. He is the local medical director for American Medical Response's NCTI paramedic program in Springfield and is a member of the National Association of EMS Physicians. Lou also serves as the medical director and treasurer as well as co-founder of MedicEd.com.

Presentation

Title: Behavior Assessment & Management: An Overview   

Didactic:  An introduction to the psychology of violence and principles of de-escalation of the agitated patient.  This lecture covers the best techniques to recognize and prevent the escalation of the agitated patient.It covers the psychology and pathophysiology of agitation and teaches the EMT and Paramedic to differentiate between medical and psychological causes of agitation.  It also covers the medico-legal and documentation pitfalls in dealing with this patient population.  

Hands on:  A skills workshop to cover various restraint techniques and the safe application and monitoring of the agitated patient.
